RM8-WB Wideband Software Defined Modem

The RM8-WB Wideband HF Modem offers the latest MIL-STD-188-110C Appendix D family of Wideband HF (WBHF) Waveforms. The WBHF waveforms occupy bandwidths from 3 kHz to 24 kHz in increments of 3 KHz, offering user data rates between 75 bps and 120 kbps.

The WBHF waveforms address the need for higher throughput needed to support IP based data and new high capacity applications such as video and Naval/Strategic situational awareness for command and control (C2).

 


The RM8-WB data modem is intended for operation with WBHF radios with an audio bandwidth exceeding the traditional 3 kHz (SSB) & 6 kHz (ISB) bandwidths. The RM8-WB data modem waveforms supports skywave operation up to 19k2 bps in 6 kHz. The modem also supports surface or groundwave operation up to 64 kbps in 12 kHz and 120 kbps in 24 kHz. The RM8-WB radio audio interface is via a 24 kHz baseband audio interface.


The RM8-WB also offers the following options for VHF and UHF radio (contact RapidM for details):

•  STANAG 4691 Annex B MARLIN (24 kHz, up to 96 kbps)
•  Wideband V/UHF Data Modem (3 to 24 kHz, up to 128 kbps)

RM8 Software Defined Modem & ALE Controller

The RM8 is a high data rate LF & HF data modem and ALE controller unit for standards-based naval and military data communications.

The RM8 is suitable for long distance point-to-point data links. The RM8 extends the capabilities of the RM6 to include STANAG 4538 3G ARCS. The RM8 is intended for installation into 19” rack systems.

The RM8 can be installed as both land and ship-borne 19-inch rack equipment. Up to two units can be installed in a single 1U slot.
 


The function of the RM8 is determined by the selection of one of the following software packs:

• M1:  LF & HF Modem (SSB, ISB, up to 19200 bps)
• M2:  HF Modem (SSB, up to 9600 bps)

The following ALE software options are available for use with M1 and M2:

RM8X4 Quad Software Defined Modem

The RM8X4 Quad Software Defined Modem is a purpose-built standalone hardware platform housing four independent modem & ALE controller functions.

The RM8X4 unit has high commonality with the RM8 and is intended for strategic and maritime data communications where size, weight, power and cost are at a premium.

The RM8X4 can be installed as both land and ship-borne 19-inch rack equipment occupying only a single 1U slot.

  


The RM8X4 offers the same wide range of standards-based waveforms and protocols found in the RM8. These are suitable for interoperable link setup operations and data transfer, whether point-to-point or point-to-multipoint.

The RM8X4 is capable of 4-channel receive diversity processing offering a significant performance gain and making the RM8X4 ideal for Naval and maritime shore station deployment.

The function of the RM8X4 is determined by the selection of one of the following software packs:

RM6-A Data Modem & ALE Controller

The RM6-A is a high data rate LF & HF data modem and ALE controller for standards-based naval and military data communications.

The RM6-A is suitable for long distance (up to 10 000 km) point-to-point data communications. The unit offers a built-in 2G ALE controller option. The RM6-A is recommended as an alternative to the RM6 for new installations.

The RM6-A is based on the latest generation hardware & software. The RM6-A matches the form and fit of the RM8.

The maximum data rate is 9600 bps over a standard 3 kHz (SSB) HF radio channel and 19200 bps over an ISB channel.



 
The RM6 is designed to operate in conjunction with an external STANAG 5066 ARQ server. The unit is intended for installation into 19” rack systems or to be used as a desktop unit. The front panel (LCD display and keypad) provides full local control of all settings and functions.

The function of the RM6-A is determined by the selection of one of the following software packs:

RC8 ARQ Server & IP Controller

The RC8 ARQ Server & IP Controller is a purpose-built platform for Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) communications functions based on STANAG 5066 and STANAG 4538.

In conjunction with the RM8 Software Defined Modem (SDM) and an external link encryptor, the RC8 provides point-to-point (ARQ) and point-to-multipoint (BROADCAST) data (chat, messaging, Email, IP) communications over long-range (BLOS) HF links. The RC8 includes a STANAG 5066 ARQ server for error-free data transfer. The STANAG 5066 HF IP and COSS Clients are embedded in the RC8. In addition, the RC8 can host a STANAG 4538 Proxy for error-free data transfer using the STANAG 4538 xDL modes provided in the RM8.



       



Various external RapidM or third party clients can bind with the 5066 server or the 4538 Proxy via the RAW SIS protocol TCP/IP interface thus allowing multiple applications to concurrent access to the ‘radio line’ - ARQ Server / Encryptor (COMSEC) / Modem / Transceiver. A synchronous balanced DCE port is built into the RC8 unit to interface with a bulk encryption unit.

The RC8 can be used in Fixed Frequency or Multi Frequency networks. For the latter ALE 2G or 3G (Fast Link Setup) channel access function is
utilized for link establishment and link maintenance.

RS66 STANAG 5066 Stack and Components

Long distance Beyond Line of Site (BLOS) radio channels are subjected to high levels of distortion and interference. Data applications often require reliable communications to assure that data is delivered if possible and to notify the sender of delivery is not possible.

The RS66 STANAG 5066 Stack and Components enables reliable end-to-end data communication over HF and V/UHF radio. STANAG 5066 ARQ effectively tacks data transferred between radio stations. The receiving station acknowledges all successfully received packets and request the sender to repeat lost packets.

RS66 is a set of software services that can be integrated with a customer’s or system integrator’s own computer software. RS66 is available for Windows and Linux. RS66 is suitable for strategic, military, naval and industrial applications requiring reliable data transfer via HF or V/UHF radio.

RS66 is designed to be used in conjunction with RapidM high performance HF and V/UHF data modems. The automatic Data Rate Change (DRC) algorithm continuously assesses and adjust the modem data rate to optimise throughput in the current channel conditions.



The RS66 offers the following application specific interface clients in addition to the core STANAG 5066 ARQ component:

RS8 Wideband HF & V/UHF Channel Simulator

The RapidM RS8 standalone unit can simulate HF and V/UHF channel conditions for reproducible performance evaluation of modems and waveforms. It is suitable for the performance evaluation of MIL-STD-188-110C modem solutions. The RS8 is fully controllable via the front panel - standalone unit – or remotely via a PC GUI using the RAP1/RIPC protocol.
 

 
HF conditions are simulated using the Watterson-Coon Channel model with some enhancements. These include the addition of radio filters at the input and output, the ability to handle more than two paths (up to 5) and the addition of a time-varying Doppler offset. Wideband bandwidths of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 & 24 kHz Can be tested.

A modified Jakes fading model is used to simulate the channel conditions for V/UHF testing. 16 relatively independent Rayleigh fading waveforms are generated and used for this purpose which provides a full scattering parabolic Doppler spectrum. Bandwidths of 25, 12.5 & 6.25kHz are supported and additional transceiver frequency error offset is applied.
